insight category will trigger for any of the events below.
Hurricane (Watch/Warning/Statement)
Issued when a tropical cyclone containing winds of 64 kt (74 mph) or higher poses a possible threat. These winds may be accompanied by storm surge, coastal flooding, and/or river flooding.
Note that this announcement can remain in effect when dangerously high water or a combination of dangerously high water and exceptionally high waves continue, even though winds may be less than hurricane force.
Tropical Storm (Watch/Warning)
Issued when a tropical cyclone containing winds of 34 to 63 kt (39 to 73 mph) or higher poses a possible threat, generally within 48 hours. These winds may be accompanied by storm surge, coastal flooding, and/or river flooding.
Storm Surge (Warning/Watch)
Issued when there are sustained 39-73 mph winds and there is a danger of life-threatening inundation (3ft or greater) from rising water moving inland from the shoreline somewhere within the specified area.
Tropical Weather (Outlook)
Issued when there is a discussion of significant areas of disturbed weather and their potential for development and includes a categorical forecast of the probability of tropical cyclone formation.
